J’adore Dior? Dior and I is the recent documentary on the Christian Dior Fashion House when “minimalist” Raf Simons became the new artistic director in 2012. As a lover of Haute Couture, I couldn’t keep my eyes off the screen as I watched Raf’s journey to develop his creative vision of bringing the iconic brand’s past into the future. With only 8 weeks to create an entire collection from scratch, I could feel the worry of every fitting deadline, the possibility of failure, and the true labor of love that makes a Dior collection come to life overnight. And I mean literally, overnight. Can you believe Dior is one of the only two Parisian houses to still use their in-house atelier? Every garment is individually crafted and embraced by their creators with the utmost adoration. I have always loved the classic styles of Christian Dior, but my love grew greater as I became personally invested in the heart and soul behind the collection.
Dior’s recent AW15 Haute Couture show was nothing less than amazing. Inspired by the great Flemish and Parisian Masters, I couldn't help my art historian self drool over the abstract techniques and neo-impressionist prints. Glittered platforms and bursts of pastel colours contrasted with elongated, whimsical silhouettes that created a fresh new look for Miss Dior. Mixing elegant innocence with decadence, Raf Simons has revitalized the household name to dazzle young and dreaming fashionistas like myself. Let me assure you, the saying is still true - J’adore Dior..
"I fantasize about what the future could be in terms of aesthetic and psychology. It’s the most difficult thing to do because you have to start from the past – your favorite architect, your favorite song – you take it all with you.” - Raf Simons
