Back on Track

by Christie Nowels

After a wonderful and spontaneous trip back to the states, it feels good to be back in London and back on track!

The sporty chic look has been seriously on trend lately and I decided that it was time for me to put my own flare on the track pant style. As much as I love dresses and a good pair of jeans, I loved finding these J. Crew loose fitting pants that are not only flattering, but perfect for traveling and a casual option for everyday wear. This revolution of the sophisticated trouser mixed with an upgrade from the harem pant maintains this cool sense of ease. I would even go as far to nickname this style, "the cool girl pants" as that's exactly how I felt wearing them. Show off a little skin with a low cut leotard like this classic one from American Apparel or layer a chunky knit for those colder nights. Looking sleek and sporty can be chic too and these pants prove it all.

Berlin Diary

by Christie Nowels

My closest friends know how hard I've been working the past few months on my Dissertation so after turning in what felt like my life's work, it was time for a holiday to say the least! And what better way to celebrate than jetting off to Europe for a city getaway. My boyfriend and I have been wanting to visit Berlin for some time and after the countless amounts of friends I have made this past year from Germany, it was an obvious choice.

From the historic memories of a war-torn nation to the traditional Bavarian food markets and the modern hipster vibes highlighting the individuality of its people, Berlin is one destination for the books. Growing up studying the World Wars, the Holocaust, and the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, experiencing the rich history of this city in person felt like I had just opened a time capsule.

The East Side Gallery was one of my favorite sights where famous artists have highlighted their own memories of the years whereby a single wall divided the city. Animated and colorful illustrations illuminate the east side of the river stands as a satirical reminder of the past. However, one particular captivated me the most - "Time isn't passing, it's you passing." I stood there staring at this chunk of concrete that literally changed the lives of millions of people and divided the rehabilitation of a once united city. This reminded me of our lives today - We go through the motions of our everyday routines and tend to forget about the world around us. For years, Berliners would pass by this symbolic concrete wall and go about their normal schedules. Even with international support, the Berlin Wall stood for almost 30 years... 30 years of families separated, 30 years of propaganda, 30 years of time standing still in the eyes of East Berliners.

Walking through the streets of Berlin, I didn't feel necessarily attached to the architecture, the food, the shops, or even the lifestyle. What made me feel attached to the city the most was it's sense of encouragement for individual thought and acceptance of all human life. From the chilling experience of walking through the Holocaust memorial to the bohemian, free-flowing vibe of its residents, Berlin may have changed throughout the century, but it will forever be known for its modernity in action. Rebuilding Berlin wasn't easy as memories of the past still reside in neighborhoods, tourist attractions, and major roads, but time heels all wounds and for Berlin, all it needed was time.

In the evening, the city is thriving between small, intimate bars where the cocktails keep flowing and the local beer gardens don't stop serving until the wee hours of the morning. Cabarets and acrobatic performances bring the eccentric past to the future in a whole new way that lights up Berlin's nightlife. I could feel the energetic vibes in the air as we walked into old abandoned warehouses that turn into the only place you want to be seen on a Thursday night. Even if you're not quite adventurous enough to try the traditional Bavarian sausages, Mediterranean, sushi, and Italian restaurants can be found all over the city with the utmost of standards in delicatessen.

Berlin is not just a holiday, but a perfect city escape to unwind your work and relax in the city that brings inspiration and history to your every sight. It may not be the most aesthetically unique as Paris or Rome, but Berlin brings a new sense of originality that truly no other city can compete.

Heading East

by Christie Nowels

Creativity can grow in the most curious of spaces. As a West London resident, there's something about heading east that simply excites my inner spirit. Heading east is more than just a couple tube stops away; it's more than the vintage stores and food festivals, and even more than the hipster young professionals sprawling from one cool bar to the next. For me, heading east is imagining a new world full of color, opportunity, and where creativity flourishes in its natural, spontaneous environment. Just walking off the tube at Liverpool Street, I instantly feel a sense of the bustling roads and lanes of restaurants full of friends' laughter. As I walk further down Brick Lane, I see one curry shop after the next and a lineup of vintage stores covering their shop windows with cut off Levi's and leather jackets. These are just the normal sightings on a Sunday afternoon when the streets are full all the way down from the Truman Brewery to the infamous bagel shops. The aspect that catches my eye the most is something so visible, yet discrete, and casts itself around a sense of mystery - the East London Street Art.

From Banksy to Sticks and many local London artists, East London is covered head to toe with imaginative designs and pops of color. Just like a fashionista emerging from a show at fashion week, these creative aspirations come to life at the hands of their artistic visionaries that cause you to turn your head at every corner and sight. As I aimlessly walk around, I find inspiration with my every move as the colors become more vibrant and the originality continues to thrive. When I was an art student, the question at the start of every term would remain the same, "what is art?" To this day, I don't think we can define what lies in the walls of these creative endeavors, but rather embrace the free-flowing nature that keeps evolving as the decades pass and cultures begin to merge. Whenever I imagine street art, I always think of the quote, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Just because we live in a traditional city with historic charm doesn't mean we shouldn't embrace the progression of modernity in all forms of artistic expression. Sometimes traveling outside your comfort zones (and tube zones) allows you to embrace a sense of individualism that you may never knew you had.

Casual Date Night

by Christie Nowels

Whether it's your first date or someone you've been dating for years, the same thought process goes through your head before a lovely evening out on the town - what am i going to wear?

And trust me, you are definitely not alone... On my last visit home to Florida, I was able to pick up some key pieces that have taken my date night outfits to a whole new level of ease. As much as I adore sexy little numbers, I also enjoy a casual look in case the weather turns to its worst or you're just not sure how dressy to be. For me, classic jeans and blouses ooze grace, while leaving you feeling confident all evening long.

For starters, it's time to bring out your straight and bootcut long jeans. Stick to darker washes for the evening to give you the chic elegance you desire or mix a lighter pair with a tank for an occasional day look. I can still fit into mine from 6 years ago, so don't be afraid to reuse those classic styles in the back of your closet. The best part about this pair I have on is you don't have to break the bank. These are from Nordstroms for $59. Talk about a deal!

Next, your blouse. I, for one, am always cold everywhere I go so I like to either bring a jacket or wear a short-sleeved sweater blouse like this one here. Between the texture, fringe detailing, and winter white color, it had "Christie" written all over it and there was no way this piece wasn't coming home with me. H&M has really revamped their clothing to bring designer trends and luxurious elegance at affordable prices. I'm so excited for their new 70's inspired, Retro Revival Collection, and of course counting down the days until Balmain x H&M. Is it November 5th yet?!

Lastly, a look can be tied together with the best accessory of them all - your handbag. I've been a Louis girl ever since I can remember, but make sure to invest in designers that you love! Don't just buy a luxury piece because it's in every fashion magazine, buy something that speaks to you and only you. I prefer to stick to a couple of my favorite designers and have started to build my collection from there. This applies to contemporary brands as well. Tory Burch and Rebecca Minkoff mix swanky fashion with amazing durability and continue to reign a space in my closet season after season.

Off Duty Chic

by Christie Nowels

Ready or not, it's time to take your pinstripes and work attire to a whole new level for the weekends...Off Duty Chic is here to stay!

For the past couple weeks, I've been working countless hours to finish writing my Dissertation for my Master's degree. With any job that you're working towards a deadline, there comes a time when you just have to turn off the laptop, put down your pen, and have a fun day outside the house to clear your head. The sunshine, crisp air, and maybe a cocktail or two can make a world of difference to your writing. But why shouldn't your work style transition into the weekend with you too?

This jumpsuit instantly takes you from the office to a world of glamour, yet simplicity with a simple step. The black and white, vertical pinstripes add that overall extra length, while the feminine sleeves gently slip off the shoulder to give you a glimpse of allure. Jumpsuits shouldn't only be confined to a night out on the town, as we have seen Hollywood's best stars bring this classic silhouette back into the limelight with shopping trips, brunches, and pool parties. Less is always more when styling jewelry with a patterned jumpsuit, so I accentuated with minimal gold pieces. And don't think you have to stick to the same base color when mixing in accessories, a brown belt can make a look instantly casual and trendy. My personal favorites are these tan wedges - who doesn't love a tall, comfortable heel anyways...
